Rasam

Ingredients

Tomato chopped 1 cup
Ginger chopped 1 Tbsp
Toor dal 1 Tbsp
Coriander powder 2 tsp
Asafoetida powder ½ tsp
Pepper corns crushed 1 tsp
Chilli powder ½ tsp
Mustard seeds ½ tsp
Curry leaves 1 sprig
Dried red chillies 5 nos
Salt to taste
Oil 2 Tbsp

Preparation

Put the chopped tomatoes and toor dal along with crushed pepper corns, chopped ginger, and garlic, asafoetida powder and salt in the pressure cooker.  Add 1 litre water and cook till three whistles.  Remove from heat and allow to cool.

For seasoning heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, allow to, pop, add chopped shallots, curry leaves and red chillies and sauté till the shallots is fried.  Pour the seasoning over the cooked rasam and serve.
